I'm stumped. The form isn't going to know whether the ID is valid until after the web service call. So by then it's too late to catch this via rules and supress the error message.
Is this a web service that you wrote?

Thanks for your reply. I was following through this method and when it came to the part about Filtering I was greeted with the error that "Filtering is not supported in Browser-Enabled form templates".
Does this mean it cannot be done with a browser enabled form template at all, or that this particular method using filtering is not ...

What warrtalon said is absolutaly right, sometimes you just have to accept that the rendering in the InfoPath client is different from the rendering on the web.

Yes, just go to Tools->Submit Options. Go to Advanced and add a rule. In the rule, specify an action to set a fields value using a function and hte function is concat of the other fields. You'll need to use the eval(eval...)) style functional repeater to concat all values. Google search for "InfoPath eval" for more info on that. ...
