Have you tried reconverting the main data connection from within InfoPath? Hopefully, that will get it to see the new schema.

If today() greater than 16/02 and today() Less than 15/03, Set Period to 16th February to 15th March

No, sorry if I was unclear. Out of the box in InfoPath, the error will display. You can add code (or use qRules) to execute the query and handle for errors that way.
