You could try to switch to another view. You build a view with an error message textbox and a back button to get back to your previous view. As soon as an error occurs, you set a value to a field that triggers a rule that switchs view.
Would be better to be able to display an alert box but....

What's weird about this is that sometimes it puts a value in the field and its just not the right one. If I open the secondary data source in MS Access I can see the correct information. That's why I'm trying to do it by code because I can't make sense of what the rules based approach is doing.
