    Cascading lists

    I'm slowly but surely trying to create a user friendly Infopath form and I now have a question on cascading information.  Based on previous queries to the forum I have created an *.xml document that now allows me to input different types of  "Activity" in one drop down box and "Analysis" in another (both within an overall repeating section).  What I would like is that when a certain "Activity" is chosen only certain "Analysis" codes are available.  As I say, I have created the *xml document that shows which analysis codes feed which activities but I just don't seem to be able to get the filter to work. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

    Many thanks for your quick response.  I followed the instructions and tried to filter the data but, although I can get a drop down list for "Activity", my drop down box for "Analysis" is empty when I input a choice in the Activity.  Here is a snippet of the *xml.document I am trying to use...

     <Data>
        <Activity value="Type A">
            <Analysis value="Analysis A"/>
            <Analysis value="Analysis B"/>
       </Activity>
       <Activity value="Type B">
          <Analysis value="Analysis Y"/>
          <Analysis value="Analysis Z"/>
           </Activity>
    </Data>

    Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong?

    Thanks in anticipation

    Hi Gazzer,

    Take the connection of the xml and take two combo boxes.
    Double click the first combo box and select the connection and in the entries text box select Activity value of the xml and click ok.
    Double click the second combo box and select the connection and in the entries text box select Analysis value and click the filterdata button below

    it and make the condition like this.

    firstcombobox field is equal to the Activity value in the xml.

    Hope this will help you.

    Again, thanks for the quick reply but I must be missing something as the Analysis drop down is still empty.

    For the Filter I am inputting "Activity" in the first column, "Is equal to" in the second and "value" (from Analysis) in the third (also I have tried "Analysis" in the third colmn that doesn't work either)

    Regards

    Hi Grazzers,

    In the first combo box select the "first combo box field" and in the second combo box select "is equal to" and in the third combo box select the "Activity Value".

    You will get the result.

    Everything works the way it should except when both the drop downs are selected/filled and then you try to change the value in the 1st drop down - the second drop down will still have the value from the previous selection listed before the otehr values available from the second selection. e.g. you selected Activity A in first drop down and Analysis B in the 2nd. Now if you try to change Activity A to B then the 2nd drop down (instead of Analysis X & Y) it will show Analysis B (selected) and when you click the drop down it will list Analysis X & Y. Is there a way to reset the drop down on such occasions? Also how to remove the blank space in the drop down or make it say "Please select" as default?

    Hi sohan10,

    make a rule on the first drop down as

    set the condition as dropdown1 is not equal to ActivityValue in the xml then

    click add action and select the "set a fields value" in the Action dropdown and In the field text box select the dropdown2 and leave the value text box as empty and click ok 4 times.

    for every selection of the list in dropdown1 makes the refreshment of the drop down2.

    Hope this will help you.

    Hi

    I have another issue.  When I choose Activity the relevant codes are shown in the next drop down box (which is fine) however when I insert an item and choose a different activity both the relevant analysis codes and the codes from the previous analysis are shown in the drop down box.  How do I suppress this so I can only see the codes relevant to each activity?

    Thanks in anticipation

    Hi Grazzers,

    Hope the previous post will help you for refresing the second drop down after selecting another activity type. If that is not the problem please let me know in detail.

    Hi

    Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately I am having the same problem.  Basically when I choose Preview mode and add another item, the details of the previous analysis drop down list are still shown even though I am choosing a different activity.  I have added rules as suggested but to no avail.

    As always, any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Grazzers,

    Can you give in detail, because you said that you are inserting an item, means are you inserting the element in the run time.

    Hi

    Yes, I have created a repeating section but when in preview mode it says Insert item.  So basically in Preview mode, when the activity is chosen in the first section the relevant analysis codes are available however, when another item is inserted i.e. another repeating section, the codes from the previous analysis are shown even if a different activity is chosen.  Bascially I need it so for each new item/section only the analysis for the specific activity codes are available, not the codes shown on the previous item/section

     Hope this makes sense

    Thanks Shiv - all work as it should now. One Last Q - How to remove the blank space in the drop down or make it say "Please select" as default?
