I have created infopath forms and published them to Sharepoint Document Libraries and they work well. In these forms I have used the 'full trust' option and signed the form specifying a trusted digital signature. After a user enters data and the form is submitted to the document library, I can save the file as xml, modify it, ...

Thanks again Clayton.
I am very new to SP administration so I'll just go through the steps on getting the form up:
1. The form is published to the portal (eg http://ourportal)

so you get this error when the form opens, right? If so, then check the form open rules in Tools > Form Options > Open and Save. Something in there must be bombing out. Is this a browser ...

I used this in one form, but I cannot for the life of me get it to work in another form even though I'm using the exact same structure.
count(preceding-sibling::groupName) + 1
Works fine in one form
count(preceding-sibling::anotherGroupName) + 1
Tells me it doesn't point to a valid location.

Qualify for what? TIBCO builds middleware from my memory of working with their EAI product years ago, but I don't know in what context you're referencing them here.

Yes, I built the form so I am sure there is no conditional display, enablement, or read-only logic.
