I put the validation on the underlying field. And I expected a red * or hatching to appear somewhere on/round the field, or at least the error message to be displayed when I tried to submit the form.
Am I expecting it to be too clever ?

I have an InfoPath form that gets the current users credentials and looks in a custom list to see if they are there. If they are not in the list there are certain fields that are disabled. When I run this on my development server it works. On my local PC it works (I am an admin), however other users get an error 5337. When ...

hi,
i would suggest since you have over 70k data items, dont use secondary data connection, just use share point object model to fetch data from a list on the change event and fetch only the item whose ID is given.
that would give a huge performance boost to your form, and you form will load much faster.
