We have a bunch of archived reports in a document library which are linked to an Info path template. That template has become corrupted but luckily we have a working copy of this in a backup folder.

I found the answer to my own issue. If anyone needs the solution, here it is:
Add the following to the default value of the fld5
max(fld1 | fld2 | fld3 | fld4)
Make sure all these fields are similar data format.

I created a VSTA project to add some custom code. The project creates ok. I exit Visual Studio and then the form. When I go back in I get this error message in a pop-up dialog box when I click "code editor" on developer ribbon. I am using InfoPath 2010. If I remove the code, I can recreate it, but same problem.
Any help is appreciated.

I really don't think this is possible without an intermediate list, that is, your first form writes the checked items into the list, and then the second form reads those items from the list. Writing from a form to a list probably requires code.
The other option would be to somehow pass parameters from one form to the other, but that ...

This error happens when fields are deleted or fields are moved around in the schema. Are you sure that you have not moved around the schema nodes?
