Ok, sounds like I did understand that. So, as I mentioned, the issue is with this data string - "ST/BL/CV/EL". There is no easy way in InfoPath to match that to the values like "CV", "EL" and so on in your email list. However, if they are unique, we could maybe use contains. I'm worried about a false positive with ...

So - I'm sorry, I'm a little confused. The user selects a Doc No in a dropdown. Based on the slash delimited distribution matrix value, you need to get the emails back from the emails list? This may be pretty tricky - because there isn't anything built into InfoPath to separate those values in the distribution matrix column to figure ...

I probably wouldn't use the same field for both - unless you never need a value from both in there at the same time? Why not add an additional hidden field for the External Approval section?

I would think promoting just the display name would be adequate, right? Thanks for all the details here! We had a problem with Form State dictionaries and had to revise qRules so as not use them, I feel your pain.

The first thing I usually do is look at all the data connections and see which ones are set to run on form open - any one of those could be your trouble. Find any SharePoint list ...

I think so, yes - you'll probably need to use an XPath filter here. Can you attach a copy of your form and I can give you a hand? Under the Options tab in a reply you can attach the form.

I wonder what the compatibility level of your old form is - is it 2007? Or perhaps the data connections are still 2007? Send it to me if you'd like me to take a quick look. Not sure if that's the exact error we see, but I do know that FV doesn't work with 2007 style list connections so that may be it. In which case you could save your ...

Oh wow - I would have never thought to check that. Thank you so much for sharing this information!

That's a good solution. Another option would be to have two sections in the same view, one with the repeating section locked down and one where it is not. Then you can use conditional formatting to show or hide the correct section.
