Yes, I do - the rule is the query the WHL Teams in the secondary data source
I have tried this form 2 different ways.
First: No using Rules (just adding data connections and query using the dropdown box properties) This did not work - there was no error, just when I selected the team, the player dropdown would not populate - I can do this way ...

So - do you have a rule setting WHL Team in the query fields in the PlayerProfiles data connection in your form? What are you setting it to?

I keep getting a the following error:
The query cannot be run for the following DataObject: PlayerProfiles
InfoPath cannot run the specified query.
Invalid "WHL_x0020_Team" specified in the query fields.

I'm confused by your initial code sample where it appears you are running the code on form load. Your button click appears to only show a message box - which if this is browser form will fail - but it looks like it is filler form from the using statements. Are you using a rule to set Col2? What are you setting Col2 to? Do you have a filter on the XPath? I don't need to be able to preview your form, so it having data connections doesn't really matter - I just need to look at it in design mode.

Thanks for your reply.
The form is actually pretty big and all data comes from Web Services so I think attaching the form would not help.
Let me try to describe it in a different way:
Let's say you have a repeating table:
Col1 Col2
A
B
Both Columns are connected to a data source that has the following ...
