Thanks for the direction. I did more digging and found other threads that discuss filtering the secondary datasource and we got it to work.
I'll probably come back to the Stored Procedure at some point, but right now, we are going to just use the Filters.

Matt, thanks for the info. I've never retrieved a value from the secondary DOM in code either, do you have any sources of info,i.e. syntax for vb. As you can tell, I'm an old vb programmer stumbling my way through xml.

Is it possible to update a specific sharepoint column (and not a field on the infopath form which has been promoted as a property) on form submit. If Yes, how? I want to have status dropdown column (type - choice)on the sharepoint form libraray and want to update the value of this field everytime form gets submitted / approved / request closed ...
