Hi Rasmus,
Welcome to our site. To populate the dropdown with the options you have to use the secondary datasource. Your MainDOM is only going to list the selected value from the linked table for the given node. I have two questions to try to help figure out what is happening:
1) Why is it not desirable to use a secondard data connection to ...

The way to do this is using ''conditional formatting''. For each field you can set conditional formatting to make a field read-only based on another field or a role. With roles you have to know the user's login names. However, you can add a rule on the submit button to set the status value of a hidden field on the form (a node in the data ...

It is also possible that there are so many fields with default values calculating and updating that the view is having to do a lot of repainting. How many columns do you have in the table and how many of the fields are calculated?

The problem is that in InfoPath anything typed in the field is just stored as plaintext in the XML document. So anyone could see the data. You could use digital signatures which would be the most secure and reliable method.

I've given this a college try -- searching the InfoPath TechNet forum and looking at the Developer's reference. Something like this would work, I guess, but I have the syntax all wrong:
function CTRL19_5::OnClick(eventObj)
{
if (XDocument.Errors.Count >; 0)
XDocument.UI.Alert(''Required information is missing.'')

Thanks for attempting to help clear the smoke, Greg. I'll respond by your numbered replies.
1. Bless you.
2. I do have the ''cannot be blank'' checkboxes checked. The submit does fail, but the user doesn't see it because the close application code runs and ''poof'' it's over.
3. Thank you for the clarification. That's the behavior I was ...
