Did you look at our HowTo on the using SharePoint loginnames with InfoPath forms?

Hi Zeb and welcome to our forum,
If you have no code in your solution, then you'll have to rely on InfoPath's default logic. If you have code, you can wrap it with a try/catch, parse the error and display an error message using a dialog box or some conditional control in the view.

Hi,
Have you modify your view.xsl?
If it's the case you need to search where you have insert a xsl:choose and correct it
If it's not the case you must open your view.xsl and search for xsl:choose and see where where the error is and correct this.
correct structure of xsl:choose see here:
http://www.w3schools.com/xsl/el_choose.asp
