When you say you are unablet o edit the XML files on SharePoint could you describe where you have put the files and how you're trying to edit them.
In terms of automatically updating the files with newly input info, that would require code a more elaborate approach to your names lists, using a database or SharePoint list instead of the XML files.

i would not use the solution with the GUID. I had the same issue once and used the GUID in one case but the second time i used a webservice to generate my ID starting from 1 to ... .
In my opinion this is a better solution as you
1. don't get these really messy 128bit hex numbers
2. you can be absolutely sure that you will never have ...
