    Dynamic Help in Custom TaskPane

    We are having trouble guessing what the right xpath is for the custom taskpane help form.

    We have a non db field which we get to work fine with the example downloaded. The Xpath is rather simple "<Field xpath="myFields/zipcode">Enter Go brown.</Field>

    When we try to display help on a repeating database field, nothing ever shows up on the taskpane. We've tried several different options for the XPath unsuccessfully.
    <Field xpath="/dfs:myFields/dfs:dataFields/d:NEWJOB/d:BILLINGINFO/@engCommentCode">Enter Hi Sally.</Field>

    This and many combinations don't work. (Yes we know you have to remove the help.xml and re-add it for changes to appear).

    Greg's on vacation but he will return next week. I will ask someone else to respond.

    Hi,

    I have one question for you,
    Repeating database field is secondary data source field(i.e,binded to secondary datasource) or main datasource field(i.e,binded main datasource)?

    Thanks.

    The datasource is from the main source, however, it is only a "retrieve" and not a submit.

    Hi,

    If your field is main datasource, you can use Xpath directly.
    For example: if your field is <my:userName></my:userName>

    <div id="my:userName" style="DISPLAY: none">
    <p class="field">userName</p>
    <p>Select the userName from the drop down box.</p>
    </div>

    I hope this will help you.
    Thanks.

    Re: Dynamic Help in Custom TaskPane

    Thanks for the reply. However I'm missing something. The xpath to the data field is Field xpath="/dfs:myFields/dfs:dataFields/d:NEWJOB/d:BILLINGINFO/@engCommentCode">

    When I plug that into the help.xml that came with the download, nothing displays in the task pane. If I use a field that I created in the form itself (i.e. myFields/zipcode) everything works. It is only when I try to put help on the specific field listed above which happens to be in myfields/datafields/NEWJOB/BILLINGINFO/path.

    Still don't have it. BILLINGINFO is a table in a sql database. engCommentCode is a field in the table. When you look at the xml of the INFOPATH FORM, engCommentCode is not a "Tagged" field like other infopath fields are, but rather an extenstion of the table name.

    <q:BILLINGINFO billingID="" jobID="" jobNo="" billAmount="" billPercentage="" dateMailed="" invoiceNo="" description="" checkNo="" engCommentCode= "" checkDate="" lastModified="" lastModifiedUser=""></q:BILLINGINFO>

    We want to display help text for each of the fields within BILLINGINFO.

    Re: Dynamic Help in Custom TaskPane

    We narrowed down the problem. The problem is in the taskpane.js that is part of the download. The following code returns 'nothing' when you have a datafield that is linked to a database field. Can anyone tell me how this needs to be modified so database related fields will actually return a value?

    var sXPath = "";
    var oPathNode = oFocusNode;
    while(null != oPathNode.parentNode)
    {
    // If the namespace is important, you can substitute tagName for baseName, and then make the
    // appropriate adjustments in the Help.xml file. The namespace has purposely been left out here
    // to conserve on file size.
    sXPath = "{0}/{1}".Format(oPathNode.baseName, sXPath);
    oPathNode = oPathNode.parentNode;
    }
    // Strip off the trailing slash as it will just take up space.
    sXPath = sXPath.substr(0, sXPath.length-1);
