    Slow Infopath Form Download/Upload Issue!?

Hello Infopathdev community, i created a infopath document (IP 2003) that will consists of several attachments (excel calculation sheet 2 mb), up to 12 different signatures (1 additional signature that is added will increase the size of the .xml document for about 200kb) So the final .xml documents are about 2-4 mb. (The documents are saved into a sharepoint 2007 library) The Infopath .xsn document is about 120 kb. According to this the user has to wait ~ 10 sec. to open the document (download) and ~15 sec to send it back (intranet) If a user is working on this document at home or mobile he will get a poorly experience by sending/uploading the document back to the library. (slow isp upload speed, or umts) So this is my main issue here. Is there a way to fix this problem? If there a chance to implement something like a processbar, so the user could accutally see the upload process? for instance: http://zetcode.com/tutorials/pyqt4/german/images/progressbar.jpg Or maybe a better solution? Thx for your time.

    Hi Purri,

While the file attachment control in InfoPath is a great feature it can really cause performance problems in your forms.  What you are experiencing is due to the file attachments in the form and connecting over the WAN (higher latency with your mobile users).  InfoPath is going to store those file attachments as base64 uncompressed blobs in your XML.  Everytime the user opens or saves a 2-4 MB XML that data goes accross the network.

There is a solution and that is to either use your own custom code to save the file attachment to a SharePoint document library and then save a link to that document in the form.  this means that users will experience a slight delay when the file is actually uploaded to the document library (when they attach in InfoPath) but opening and saving the form will be fast because the attachment is not stored in the form.

While you can code this yourself you might find it much easier to purchase our qRules tool which has the functionality built in: http://www.qdabra.com/en/products/qRules.aspx

You can read our documentation here that explains how you use the command in qRules to accomplish this: http://www.infopathdev.com/files/folders/qrules/entry40104.aspx

We do offer a trial version of qRules so you can try it out yourself.

Hello Ted, thank you for pointing me out this great tool. It looks awesome and its exactly what im looking for. Just one challenge comes in mind that is how to secure the attachment for editing? We use the signiture to secure also the attachment fields from beeing changed or manipulated after upload. I won`t give the any person access to change the initial attachment even the person who has uploaded it first. Should i restrict the permission the sharepoint list that includes all the attachments? If the person doesnt have permission to the list how should he be able to save the attachment? Thanks

    Hi,

Yes the permissions need to be managed in the SharePoint document library.  I believe you should be able to customize permissions for the document library so that users can ADD new items only and have no other rights (like edit or delete).  There is a way to customize permissions in SharePoint.
