Moving Infopath template and historic xml files to another sharpoint site.

I have a template published on one SharePoint server. We made edits to the form as an upgrade but will be publishing it to another SharePoint location on the same server. We need to move the historic XML files from the old site to the new site and have them link to the new template.

The first thing I did was published the new template over top of the old site. This updated the xml files with the new fields and formatting. so now the old data forms look correct.

Then I turned around an published the new form on the new sever.

Here is the issue. You can't simply copy the only XML files to the new server in the form library... the "mso-infoPathSolution PIVersion href=" still points to the old SharePoint site.

So when you open the xlm files you are still linking back to the old template.

The second you delete the old site the xml files will be unable to connect to a template.

How do I successfully connect the old xml files to the new template on the new site without manually editing 800 plus XML files =/

    1. Open the new form library.
    2. Click Modify Columns and Settings to the left of the view.
    3. Under General Settings, click Relink forms to this form library.
    4. In the view presented, select all of the forms that you want to relink.
    5. Click the Relink button.

    Hi shawn.taylor,

I have exactly the same problem in front of me. I have created exactly the same plan.

    1. Rework the template's data connection to the new site.

    2. Publish the template to the new site

    3. Copy and paste the existing forms

    4. Relink the forms with the embedeb functionality of SharePoint  - Relink Documents

Did you experience some hudrles ? I have read hundreds of posts and you are the only one who matches exactly my situation.

about the href:.... it is clear it has to be direkted to the new template's location (the new site). What about the ID of the form, in the XML documents there is a tag which contain the "name"("name" posesses the old template's name and the ID). Will it produce any hurdles, because after relinking this name is not changed.

     Thank you in advance,

    Regards,

    Svetoslav

Thanks for the replay gents i found another way. I have over 800 files and relinking then is a ^&$%%$# so this is what i did.

    1. download Notepad++ [free]

    2. I opened everyone of them with Notepad ++

3.Select [Search] then [replace]. I put in the from and to urls then clicked [Replace all in all open documents].

    4. Then clicked [File] and [save all]. then upload the xml files to the new server.

WORKED LIKE A CHAMP. PC do not fall for those tools that want you to pay hundreds of dollars to perform this same function!!!

Has anyone experienced the issue of the "Relink" view in SharePoint not working?

I have just transferred over dozens of libraries with 1000's of forms in them and was planning on just relinking them in SharePoint (this has worked many many times before without issue).  For some reason, all of the new libraries refuse to relink the historic forms to the new template - I select the forms, click on relink, but the template location remains the same!

Although the solutions listed below do work, I can't really go through several thousand forms one at a time updating urls....any thoughts?

    hi ben,

it seems you have not published the template to the new form library. you will need to republish the modified template to the new library.

Has anyone resolved this? My problem is that the moved XMLs point to the latest version of the template. The latest version looks a lot different than the one created 2 years ago and blows up with schema validation errors. So we need a way to point 1-xxx to version 1 of the template and xxx-xxxx to version 2..... etc We bought the Modify IP tool from Qdabra, but that doesnt seem to mention linking to versions. thoughts?

    Hi ClayDevin,

Correct, the Modify PI Tool just changes what template is used to open the form.

If the template needs to be smart about old versions there are a some options:

    • Side-by-side: open XML from old template versions with the old templates
      • publishing all templates as content types and relink the forms to the correct parent version (using Modify PI Tool)
      • pros: relatively easy
      • cons: need to know which version the XML was written with which means opening in notepad - time consuming
    • Batch convert old XML versions to new schema
      • you can use our DBXL Migration Tool (with free DBXL Trial) and create an XSLT transform that maps from V1, V2, Vxxxx to Vn
      • pros: one step batch operation
      • cons: creating the transform could take some time
    • Add custom code to your InfoPath form that checks the version and upgrades them based on version when it loads
      • cons: need to write code and the code needs to transform all prior versions

Let us know if you need an hour or two of help with these.

Thanks for the ideas. Your DBXL tool looks to be a useful tool. Requesting download now, thanks again!
