Yes I have the following formula on Col2 for Default Value: COMPANY_CONTRACT_NAME[CONTRACT_NUMBER = ContractNumber] where COMPANY_CONTRACT_NAME iand CONTRACT_NUMBER comes from databasource and ContractNumber is the value of Col1   thanks so much Mike

I might have found a solution myself.  I created a rule to set the default value to something different than the default value at Form Load instead of connected to the actual dropdown. It seems to work.  if you have bettter solution please let me know. thanks.
