 Thank you for writing back to me.  I tried what you suggested and I just gave the approvers read access to the forms library and it worked. 

 Hi Brucacuda, I was just checking to see how you solved this problem.  I am having the same issue.  When the user clicks "edit this task" in Infopath it stops the workflow and the workflow error says "Error updating a list item Document checked out" but I don't have that enabled in the forms library.  ...
