Can you email me your form? I'd like to take a look at it - include some info on where the rule is, so I don't have to hunt for it. :)

Is this in a browser form? Or filled out in InfoPath?
On those drop downs - do you have "show only unique values" selected? Are they inside a repeating section / table?

I'm thinking when you change the field and tab out the form probably sends data to the server (including the current value of the field bound to the checkbox).

Can you be sure the calculated value is displayed again? Perhaps it is still hiding - the checkbox control didn't postback.
You could try putting a border around the calculated value, so you'd know for sure when it displays.
You could also try setting the postback on the checkbox control to Always (under the control's properties, ...

Oh, and also - you had this happen after a SharePoint update - so your filters worked, and then, after a ShP update, stopped working - and like I said - I won't use filters on repeating tables or sections at all any more, having gotten bitten by this myself.

So, the ReceivedByOffice rule seems to only need to be on ...

It isn't that anything is logged during Design Checker, but I was thinking when you try to admin approve the form - isn't that when you get the "Object reference....etc" error?
Are you saying that Design Checker isn't working with a bunch of forms? Or admin approving isn't working? I'm confused again.
I'd guess ...

Does your form have code? Can you check the SharePoint logs, see if you have additional info on the upload attempt?
I'm assuming the issue is occuring on a single form - but perhaps that's a bad assumption? Can you admin approve any template?

You'd just need to add similar rules to your fields bound to the text boxes - rules only fire when the value of the field the rule is on changes. You may also want to use a default value instead - but from your initial post, it sounds as if the calculation has conditions, so a default value may not be appropriate for your scenario.
