I believe the object is disassociated because it has already been deleted from the DOM and you are seeing it just before its bits are destroyed. Your solution will work fine so long as people follow the instructions. I'm sorry there wasn't a more viable solution for you.

OK Questions first Make the button "Rules and Custom Code", then add an action to the rules so that it quesries the main connection. If you didn't want to worry about speed etc then you could run a rule that sets the queryfield linked to ID field, query the dataconnection, then return that value into the datafield ID.  ...
