I'm glad you figured this out! I would like to say that you can add your own fields, even when you connect the form directly to the DB. This new fields come in under a new namespace, and you can bind whatever controls you like to them!

I believe you have fallen victim to event bubbling. There are a couple of options here, but what is happening is that the OnValidate event is being called for several nodes through a hierachy. Instead of using e.Source, I suggest using e.Site, and on top of that you should probably put a limiting check on there to make sure you don't get that ...

Yes, there is. This is is how I do it:
IXMLDOMNodeList nlHappyFields = thisXDocument.DOM.selectNodes( ''//my:myFields/my:group1/my:group2/my:happyfield'' );
IXMLDOMNode nHappy;
while( (nHappy = nlHappyFields.nextNode()) != null )
{
thisXDocument.UI.Alert( ''State of happiness: '' + nHappy.text );
}
I hope this helps! For XPath tutorial, ...

Try this:
Tools -> Form Options -> Treat blank values as zero

Could you tell us a little more of what you are trying to do? Then we can give you step by step instructions. The most imporatant part is how your schema is setup and when you want to generate the randomly unique ID. Also, what node you want to put the GUID on. The node will need to be of string type and you can put the code behind a button or ...

I know this sounds drastic, but if it works on another computer with the same configuration and everything is working fine over there you might want to reinstall the operating system.
Otherwise, I've never heard of anything like this happening.

That's what GUIDs are for. Check out these posts:

The my:group10//my:group12 was intentional, the other was a mistake. This is getting really complicated. If you can make a sample form of exactly the schema that you are trying to display, with expression boxes and the XPaths you are trying to use and send it to me, it will be much easier to think about.

Now I'm really confused. When you say you have fields like <my:FORD> and <my:HONDA> are you saying that you have an undefined set of fields that the user can choose from or are you talking about VALUES from a few different fields? For the latter, take a look at this. I didn't test, but I'm thinking it will work.
What do you think? ...

Oh man, yeah you definitely want to use a repeating structure here. Writing that code over and over again is horrible. You will also want to store the actual Base64 data into the form, not a link.
1. Make the schema repeating. This is very important
2. Double-click whatever node the picture control is bound to, change the data type to ...
