Hey Gary.
The issue is that manager email is not stored in Active Directory.
You could add it as a custom field.
Or you would need to be able to get the manager's username in AD and then requery for their user data secondarily.
Have you looked at Qdabra's AD Web Service?

You can check whether the number is a valid number and if it's not, skip the calculation and show the user an error.
It would be easier to give you a more specific answer if you would show us the part of your code that is causing the error.

One thing you can do to begin troubleshooting ...

We have several excel sheets that we are going to be converting to infopath forms. I have created an excel sheet that you can paste the content of your template.xml and it will format it in the format needed for the XLS_to_XML.exe.config file.

I'm not using the Submit button but rather just the "Save" button under Form Options. If I use the submit, the data gets stored in the SharePoint list but the .xml file does not. When you use the "Save" button, the user is prompted to enter a filename. This is the step I'm looking to avoid.
Hope that ...

We have developed several InfoPath forms with database lookups via rules that are used throughout the country via a shared drive. The forms and (Access) database that stores the queries used to retrieve data (for lookups) are housed on the shared drive. The forms have about 5 data connections. Recently we rolled em out to our London ...
