sorry i forgot to mention that you will have to use conditional formatting to hide the field on the condition
count(preceding-sibling::*) >= 3
this will display a maximum of three records

try using this conditional formatting on the repeating table
count(preceding-sibling::*) + 1 > 3

assign the value of your merged fields to a rich text box and promote the rich text box (use plain text as function).

you can use java script to achieve this, i would suggest using this path only if you know what you are doing.
