Submit dataconnection is used to specify the destination where your form data should be submitted and Receive dataconnection is used to receive data to be used in the form like populating into form fields.  Does this answer your question?

you can use the count function instead position: count(preceding-sibling::my:<RepeatingGroupNodeName>) + 1

It is posible to change the code type in your form, but it would require removing any code you already have.  Are you already using JavaScript in the form?
