I don't believe this is possible with InfoPath's out of the box functionality. It would require a more advanced method.
We recommend using qRules for this. You can watch a video demo here or read Hilary's excellent walkthrough here.
Good luck!

My first hunch was the same as yours; basically, to see where in the UDC file the sort order is defined. But the sort order might indeed be stored somewhere else and not in the UDC file. I'm honestly not sure. It would take spelunking through the source files to find out where, or you can just create a new data connection and convert that to ...

Yes, Qdabra (and some customers) have used the Excel to XML tool with Office 365.
The main issue I've seen with the Excel to XML tool is that we cannot map the forms directly into the SharePoint form libraries. The connection between the tool and Office 365 hasn't been possible.

It sounds like you need a custom Active Directory web service that uses an LDAP connection string to query your company's active directory, and return a result that indicates whether the email address is already assigned to another person.
I don't know of anything in InfoPath or SharePoint that allows this. It would probably be a ...

It looks like the video has a link to the author's website. I would try contacting her directly for help.
Good luck!

Those "Catastrophic failure" messages are quite difficult to troubleshoot. I don't really have any advice, but let us know what you find.

Sorry, I don't underatand. The contact selector is "internal" to InfoPath. We do not see and cannot control the data connections it uses. Notice that the schema for the contact selector / people picker is read only, that is, the schema is locked and we cannot modify it.
