I'm having some difficulties figuring out how to allow my team to pull filtered reports on their own into Excel. My first thought was to create an InfoPath form that queries our SQL tables, allows our users to filter the query in the form and then submit the data to a SharePoint list in which they can export the data. It seems a bit ...

I agree - sounds as if it may be something to do with your SharePoint server. Do you have access to the logs? You may want to review those.

Yes. The fact that my colleague experiences it in a totally different site, workflow and library, suggests that it is not something peculiar to my setup.
Another one of my colleagues had indicated that a Microsoft patch was needed but he didn't have any details and I think it might have been something he heard second hand.

I think your current approach is fine if it works for you. You can have dropdowns bound to fields in your main data source, sure. Just use whatever they are supposed to use for the value / display and data connection....

I've also not seen this.... You are basically taking the currently published form, modifying it, and republishing it to the same library? I have seen issues with promoted properties when a form is published to a different library then back to the original (the column GUIDs in the manifest end up off, and columns get duplicated or recreated).

I get so stuck in doing things the way I've always done, I don't think outside the box to come up with something easier LOL, even when requirements are different.
Is there something that I can do with the drop down fields though? Where I could set a default value to read the secondary data source?

Thanks Hilary. I guess I'm on my own with something very specific to my site going on.
What about the disappearing variables in the workflows associated with this library? This is very predictable and my colleagues also experience it on their workflows.
Publish a form in InfoPath, and then in SharePoint Designer I check the workflows ...

What I am trying to tell you is that the field you are setting, which is a lookup, must be set to the ID of the lookup item.

I am checking of this value to the ID of the main lookup column. Here is my formula "Title[ID = Full_x0020_Name]". Title is the column with data and Full Name is the primary lookup field.
