I am trying to create a dynamic form where if select something from a bound dropdown field it changes which fields are displayed. For example if they choose Basketball it shows fields that allow them to register upto 5 players, whereas if they choose softball it shows 8.

Hi Danielle and thank you for the thorough and thoughtful question! You've obviously done your homework.
Your intuition is correct. Less code means less maintenance cost for you. Zero code forms are the best.
Why is your form taking long to submit? Does your form have images or attachments? Is it a server issue? That would be the root ...

Sure, you can write some .NET code that gets the hardware info and set that data into the XML nodes of the form (i.e. the fields). Not hard, but will require 10-20 lines of code. Let us know if you want to pay for an hour and we'll do it.

This website ...

Add user roles, and open rules that switch to a read-only view if opened by somoene that is not currently assigned. All pretty straightforward, but don't expect SharePoint workflow to be easily ...

You don't need code to do this. You can use a rule that concatenates the URL of your server with the name of your XML form. If you need to get the URL of your server, you can get the Solution location using code. This is covered in the SDK (go to Resources on the right hand side of the main InfoPathDev.com homepage).
