I typed in Hello Clay, and it immediately reverted to HelloClay when focus changed. I simply put that formula as my default value, although you could also set it as a rule.

I'm talking about a sharepoint group which is regularly synched with AD group. I have a group called "SYS-ADM" and want all the users who are members of this group to be able to access this form in addition to the peple entered manually by users in text box. I can't maintain another contact list for the form.

It's not normal, and it has never happened to me, so it must be your configuration or setup.

I've created a date picker object in infopath. When I preview the form the date picker works just fine. However, when I publish the form to my sharepoint site the date picker box is gone, and I am left with only a textbox. Is this a configuration issue or is there something wrong here?

Yeah, it's best if you can make use of the OOTB workflows as long as they meet your needs, but they often don't and require a custom workflow. I don't know. Any 3-state workflow I'd use would be one I built myself, which could send an email at any point in time.
