In case anybody else runs across my problem here is what I did to make it work.
Created another GetUserProfileByName Data Connection. Made the name GetUserProfileByName-Manager
Created a field and called it Manager-Query
Inside of Manager-Query I have a rule:
Set field value Account Name = .

Hilary, do you mind my asking exactly where the qRules copyTable command fails when deploying to a server?

The backslash here is used to "escape" special characters. Where the "\\" is near the start of the url was interpreted as a single "\" when processed.
You will need to replace each "\" backslash with double "\\", which will then be interpreted as a single backslash when ...

Thanks for the reply. Can I ask if the Office client license you are referring to is the InfoPath 2007 license or do I have to purchase the Office license as a suite (which includes word, ppt, excel etc.)?

You do need Office client licenses for users clicking New. You do not need the SharePoint licenses for Office.
