Hi and welcome to the InfoPath Dev forums.
You should take a look at our Web Services Solution Pack (qWSSP), it makes connecting to SQL or SharePoint sources for querying data in InfoPath WAY easier than the built in connections in InfoPath. It works fine with IPFS too. authenication is managed via the webservice.

Alternatively, if I could authenticate against a data connection using the service account of SharePoint, that would also be plausible solution. I just ideally don't want to have to resort to storing plain-text passwords in document libraries, although it's looking like that's my only option.

Hi Lindie,
One way you could do this if you populate the dropdown value from a secondary data source (2DS).
See the sample template I created, if you preview the template and put in A, B, or C you will see the dropdown values change.
The steps to do this are:
1. Create your secondary data source - I did this in Access and exported as ...

Thank you for the link. This works fine, I can get the values from TFS and populate textboxes. However, I have a repeating section so I want the user to be able to enter the id, click a button and get TFS information for the ID. The user may then click the "Insert item" to bring up a new section with 3 textboxes and a ...
