This doesn't sound like normal InfoPath behavior. Have you tried to repair InfoPath on your machine? (or try to design on another machine) I would assume that something is corrupt. If you can design other forms with no issues, then the xsn itself might be corrupt. I imagine that going into the source files and doing some cleanup would be ...

Oh yes, I did put the @ symbol in there just to try it.  I did not think I had saved it to the form.  Sorry about that...   The command that errored was SubmitToSharePointList /submit=ShPSubmit /mapping=LevelTwoMapping /id=my:id3.    I do not understand why...  it did not happen until I mapped the Level One items ...

I'm a bit confused that this is happening.  Is this PreferredName value coming from a field in the form, or is it something you're manually entering into rule conditions. If you display the SharePoint data in a repeating table in your form, does the O'Donnel name show up correctly, or does it display as O'Donnel?
