Check if the server is throwing a 5566 error, in which case you may find the permissions (either the site or of the user profile service ) are not allowing it.

Though I have used that fix for other situations it would not work for this one as I need the workflow to write back to the form so users can open the form to see what has tasks have been completed. This allows them to chose to kick off other workflows if needed / or not. I find it hard ...

I finally got the desired result by leaving off the trailing @value.

Since you indicated this should work, I kept at it and I'm closer. Using the following, I can delete the Value field of the records I want to delete:
