OK, The key seemed to be that on the initial form you need something that will be unique to that form only. I had a filename field, which when submitted to SP, changed the format of the now() value from _ to : I used the translate function, so as to change _ back to :. The field could then be referenced as part of my main data connection.

Could you attach an XSN with what you have tried so far?

Thanks Steven! As per my understanding, Sharepoint allows to activate InfoPath form templates to a Site Collection level (i,e. to your root site) and not to any subsite level. SOLVED: Instead of using InfoPath's data connections to connect to the SQL database, I just used custom VB code to handle the queries and it's uploading fine now!
