Don't use the expression. Just use the result and say "If field2 is great than XX, then do stuff" Don't put the conditional formatting on field 2 - put it on field A, right?

I don't understand why this wouldn't be easily doable. What is keeping your users from changing that data? Are you displaying data from the secondary data connection? If so, you need to put that data in a data element on your main data source, and then people can update it without trying to affect the data in the list.

It's in IP, but not in the Tools > Form Options > Property Promotion tab. You do it as part of the publishing process when you get to the part of the wizard where you choose columns. that's where you define your promoted properties, assign them to new or existing columns, choose an action (if repeating), and choose ...

What do you mean when you say you don't have access to the server? You can't use SharePoint at all nor the web services it exposes?
Or do you mean you can't log on to the server directly? You wouldn't need to do that anyway, but you still will be accessing server resources.
If that's ok, then my idea is ...

You definitely don't want to repeat pages - that would get confusing and cumbersome. Why do you consider it too many questions on one page? It's the same # of questions no matter ...

Not that I know if. It's just a simple action when using SharePoint Designer. You connect to the site, create a workflow, tell it to run on a new item creation, make an action that checks in the document. I don't think you need an article for that, but you can let me know if you have any problems while building it.

You can check-in with an SPD workflow.
