As far as I know, there's no way to accomplish this. You've run into an annoying InfoPath limitation that I've run into before. Sadly I have to re-do the formatting on the table if I re-bind it.

You are very correct in the limitation of this approach. But in InfoPath, we can't use rules to insert instances of a repeating group - which is why it takes code (or qRules, if you prefer not to write the code yourself).
