We're looking into this and will get back to you shortly. What version of SharePoint are you using? I'm guessing 2010 since that is the version of InfoPath. My hunch is that this could be a limitation of InfoPath Form Services.

I had a similar requirement and was trying to use your formula, but when I am trying to filter the field1 , I am getting an error message as shown in the attached image.
