I actually went back into the data connection and set the searchtype to exact since I knew exactly what I was doing with this data connection. That seemed to fix the problem.
What I don't understand is why I had to do it on this one when I've used this FindUsersbyName function on many other forms without having to set the search ...

I think SharePoint stores a time even though the field is set to Date only.
Try addDays(now(),SLA) instead. This should append a timestamp too and SharePoint should accept the value.

Do I have to do something special on the workflow itself? All i see for that workflow task in the SP ribbon is Open/Cancel.
