For an out-of-box approach, you could map those XMLs into ShP lists using CAML - we just finished two weekly webinars showing that technique - check out http://www.youtube.com/Qdabra. I am guessing that this is by design for data connection files. You'll have to copy the UDCx file and manually do it and then modify the existing data connection to point to the new UDCx. Hopefully, that will preserve the binding in the form.

Strangely, dragging the control for the Append changes text field shows no control at all when I actually open the form. Possibly because there is no text inside yet? I would think at least it would show a text area that is empty.
