I would guess that you'd need to modify the view file to change that. I think it's silly too that InfoPath automatically sets those to read only - but I'd guess if you save the form as source files and check out the view in a text editor, you'd be able to override that....

Is your SharePoint server on-prem or Office 365 (SharePoint Online)?

Hi! So, I'm a little confused. Are you referring to multiple dropdown controls here - that if the user selects "B" in the first dropdown, the second dropdown shows "C" or "D"? Or am I misunderstanding?

I haven't ever used the Update Form option - it looks like it just triggers a postback - so the data isn't being submitted, but any postback actions can be grouped. Is that your desired outcome? If instead you want to save data, you could just use rules on your button and have one rule submit, and another set a field to "saved ...

This does sound like an awful lot of work for the given end goal. Can you just use a list with external data? Or is there too much data in your SQL table for that to work well?

Yup, I can publish an InfoPath form to a new library. I was having a weird authentication issue, but it was just that my password was expired. Once I updated it, I had no problems.

I agree - sounds as if it may be something to do with your SharePoint server. Do you have access to the logs? You may want to review those.

I think your current approach is fine if it works for you. You can have dropdowns bound to fields in your main data source, sure. Just use whatever they are supposed to use for the value / display and data connection....

I've also not seen this.... You are basically taking the currently published form, modifying it, and republishing it to the same library? I have seen issues with promoted properties when a form is published to a different library then back to the original (the column GUIDs in the manifest end up off, and columns get duplicated or recreated).

What I am trying to tell you is that the field you are setting, which is a lookup, must be set to the ID of the lookup item.
