One solution I can think of is by creating two hidden fields with different operations that runs and sets another field to show a result if a certain condition has been met.
Example:
field A + field B = field E
field C contains the formula A + B
field D contains the formula A - B
Rule 1:
Condition: if field B ...

This is just a hunch but have you tried adding a rule to clear all fields involved when setting the initial value (field 1) to blank? It would also be great if you could attach a sample ...

Modifying a column from within your workflow should trigger workflows that start when the item is changed.

Yeah, the separate workflow is just tied to the same library/list with a condition that checks that column.
