Did you try what I pasted on the rule on group6 that set's field3's value?
xdXDocument:GetDOM("test")/execution/subpara/subunit[count(current()/preceding-sibling::my:group6) + 1]/code
Code is not capitalized in your test data source when under subunit. That is why I said it is not capitalized. XPath is case sensitive.
You can ...

Hmm. I capitalized code but still get the error. As far as using rules, do you think I can still use xml with the rules to populate 8a, 8.b, or is this strictly for rules? Thanks for the help!

You can use the ShowDialog command. Make sure when you inject your form you select "Rich Client" in the compatibility section.
Sample command syntax:
ShowDialog /text=Click here to continue. /buttons=OKCancel
The QdabraRules result node will have the DialogResult - so, in the case of OKCancel the result field will be either OK or ...

Parent SharePoint list which is called "CheckRequest" has a blank record everytime the SubmitToSharePointList envoked. Yes, we are submiting all mapping at the same time. As mentioned, I exactly followed your previous article (customer, order, order details example) which is quite similar.

Yes. I am using qRules. I should confess, I am new to it though. How to show custom message/ dialog box with "Ok/Cancel" with qRules would be an appropriate question :)

I think since you only want to set field3 in certain cases (this is 8.a, 8.b, etc) you will have to use a rule rather than a default value. Also, subunit code is not capitalized.
xdXDocument:GetDOM("test")/execution/subpara/subunit[count(current()/preceding-sibling::my:group6) + 1]/code

I changed the group 4 to group 6 but it still doesn't work.

I was trying to use this particular xpath in the expression box in group 6 and in field 3 group 6 of the attachment in the previous post.
Thanks!
