You can place the radio buttons in small Section controls, and apply conditional formatting to change their background color.

I don't think InfoPath 2007 would work much differently in this regard.
InfoPath doesn't know anything about your domain's security settings or that the permissions on the access file are wide open. It is designed to warn the user if code is trying to make database requests that don't use the form's data ...

Try extracting your template (make a copy, rename the copy's extension to .CAB, and use a file extraction utility to extract it).
Open manifest.xsf in a text editor and remove any parts that refer to ruleSet_218. Then save the file, right click it, and select Design.

Just add conditions to your rules so that it uses one formula when the value of the checkbox is yes, and another formula when it's no.

Could you give details of what you tried and what happened? That would make it easier to determine why it's not working for you.

It sounds like the tremendous number of controls is the bottleneck. If there are four controls for each question, that means about 400 controls in the view, and rendering that could be a performance problem.
Like you mentioned, splitting up the questions into smaller sections (i.e. views) in one form would probably help a lot.

This looks like an error that occurs on certain MS office setups and is caused by a certain security patch:

the fix is to install MS Office 2007 SP2: ...

The code you pasted is for C# in InfoPath 2007+, but your form seems to be set up to use JScript, so this will not work.
