You should be able to hack the schema created for your database connection and change the field to optional. If you ever update your data connection you will need to do this again. Greg Collins [InfoPath MVP]

You need access to a certificate authority. I believe that if you have your own domain controller, or access to one, that you can access the certificate authority from there and create a digitial certificate of your own.
