Ok, I was able to solve the problem. It doesn't really need any coding at all.
Just for the benefit of others, here's a general description of what i did.
I build two tables in SQL, the two tables should have primary keys in order for submit to work.
I then created an infopath form based on the database. The two tables are linked as one-to-many ...

I want the user to enter the value of a control only in the first row, and then automatically assign that value to the same column every time the user inserts a new row in the repeating table
is this possible?

Hi Thierry,
I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you asking ''how we bind the text from a secondary data source to the main DOM''? Or, are you asking ''how do we set default data using template.xml''? These are different questions.
For the first: you can bind a dropdown to your main DOM (data source) and specify a secondary data source ...

Glad you got it fixed!
Just a side note... I've since learned that you do not need the first .= in the XPath... You can shorten the XPath like this:

Hi. I'm not sure I understand your question... what exactly are you trying to do?
It sounds like you have a secondary data source that the user enters values into, and you want those values to be in the main data source so that you can send the form (with those values included) via email to someone.
If this is the case, you need to have some ...
