If the field is ''bound'' to the secondary data source (the web service dom) then the field should update. If, however, the field is bound to the main dom, then that is why its not being updated.

Sounds like for some reason the data connection that feeds the value/display name pairs to the drop-down list box control is not being connected to when the user opens the form from email.

Keep in mind that all values are stored as text in the XML file... It is the schema that determines the data type of that text value.
So, when you enter ANY value from code, you do it the same way:
thisXDocument.DOM.selectSingleNode(''my:node'').text = ''999''

Your not checking anything with your use of current().
You need to perform some sort of comparison:
[@Line = current()/@Line]
or something. . .

The first line gives away the issue: System.Security.SecurityException
Sounds like your form is going to need to be full trust for your code to work as it is written

Sorry, there is no XPath for this.... you will need to use code to determine your conditional formatting in this case. The code is requried to figure out the 48 hour difference.

If you are using InfoPath 2003, then you can export for form files (see File menu) and then look at the manifest.xsf file. That's where the rules are stored. Conditional formatting is another story, as this is stored in each view .xsl file, at the specific location where the condition is entered. Good luck on that!!
