This would only be applicable with Browser based forms. otherwise the client is always making the connections to the data. Even with a UDC the connection is still from the form, on the client to the data source. In your case, either the cleints would need to establish the VPN first or you would need to move your data base so that it is ...

I am not sure why you would see InfoPath twice in Task manager.
I would create a new form based on your primary table. Then slowly add your other Data Connections and test each time. That should tell you what impact each makes or if there is something bad in your original template.
There are many posts here on how to optimize your form for ...

Do you mean a UDC? a Universal Data Connection?
I am not sure WSS supports UDCs but you should not need one. UDC are ways of storing data connections centrally and managing them centrally rather than in each individual form. They are only required for Browser based forms, which ar eonly available with MOSS.

There are lots of posts and blogs here too.

If you are moving to a web based form your data connections need to be come UDC, Universal Data Conenctions. Do some research on these.
Under data connections there is a button to convert the existing ones, you just need a place to publish them in SharePoint.

A rule on LB1 will fire each time it is changed.
After thinking about it you do not even need to make it conditional.
Just reset LB2 to null or empty string each time LB1 is changed. If it resets it the first time no matter.
This would give you what you are looking for.

So the issue is that you want the user to be able to edit the email, rather than it automatically being sent? It appears you do not need to attach the form.
To do this use a hyper link "mailto:" link rather than a submit. You can use concat to embed field values or text into the hyperlink and therefore into the to, subject ...

It is simple to do with rules in InfoPath.
Create a rule for LB1.
Make the condition LB2 is not null then set field lb2 to null.

One thing while using a SQL table is that you must have a primary key field for InfoPath to submit to it.
Start simple and work your way up as you learn.
