thank you to everyone for their help thus far. I have another question. is there anyway to lock a field after it has been filled out? I have a form that is to be sent to a number of individuals in turn, with each individual filling out a part of the form. I need to be able to prevent people from editing what has been entered by the previous users. Is this possible?

Using Conditional Formatting you can make the field read only.
Open the text box properties and select conditional formatting from display tab. Put a condition to make this field read only when the field is not blank.

The only problem with making the field read only if it's not blank in conditional fomatting is that the person who is originally filling out the form won't be able to modify the value of the field if they make a mistake.

Through the use of user roles I believe you can do what you need to do - as you can define views and conditional formatting based upon predefined user roles that you assign.
