Adding a new Data Field vs. just a Textbox control

I am trying to follow the instructions here: https://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/174733/is-it-possible-to-set-a-rule-on-a-people-picker-control-in-infopath whereby basically, I'll be adding some hidden text fields to be equal to a people picker field, and then running some validations off of that. My question is, I've noticed that it's possible to just add a textbox control to the form without actually adding a bound data field. should i ever do that? or should I always use a data field and then bind a textbox to it?

As far as I've ever seen when I add a control like a textbox, InfoPath automatically adds a field (with a generic name like "field1", "field3" etc) to the main data source. I don't think it is possible to add an unbound text box? If it was, I wouldn't do it - binding is where the control stores its data, so there would be no point. You can add fields to the main data source w/out putting corresponding controls on the form, and I do that all the time. :)

Ahh - ok, that clears things up. Thanks!
