Unfortunately, the string length function doesn't count the tags the user uses for formatting their rich text - is that the issue you are running into?

My issue is that the users can technically type more and more when I used a data validation for a rich text. I just need to find out are there any ways to set a character limit for a rich text box? I have no luck at all! Thanks

Validation won't apply till the user changes focus, I think. So they actually have to tab out - you won't be able to literally stop them from entering more chars, like the character limit does on plain text fields. Here's a sample with data validation - save locally, right click and select design, preview.

Sorry I did not see your sample with data validation. Can you be specific with (steps) save Locally, right click and select design, preview? I really appreciate!

In the heading of my post there is a link to a form. Right click the link and select the option to save the file locally - the precise text will vary depending on your web browser. Save the file someplace on your computer that you can find it. Navigate using Windows Explorer to the saved file. Right click the saved file and select "Design" from the menu. Then you can preview the form from InfoPath designer and try it. :)

Re: How to Add the 1250 character limit to a rich text box in InfoPath Form

     Hi,

I am trying to add additional "Exit" button to your "Form3.xsn" provided in order to be able to exit out the form completely when I type less than 10 characters by using the expression "string-length(.)>10". If I type more than 10 characters and tab out, the comment box will turn in Red and unable to allow to exit the form by clicking on "Exit" button. Do you know how to set the rule/condition for this option of "Exit" button? Please advise. Thank you so much for your help!

See attached. I also added some screenshots to help you with creating this type of formatting rule. :)

     Good afternoon,

Thank you so much for providing detail instructions with the screen captures! It's very helpful. I followed your guidance and used the rule/condition for either "Formatting" or "Action" for the button that works perfectly. You're ROCK and make my life so much easier. I really appreciate all your quick help as always! :-)

Have a wonderful night and stay safe!

Hi, Hope you are doing well. I just have a quick question that if I want to set the character limit up to 1250 characters on the comment box. Would it be possible to count the number of characters when the users type exceeding 1250 characters? is there any way to have a prompt message when exceeding character limit instead of using the screen tip option? Thank you for your help!

Unfortunately no - there isn't a way to count as they are typing. We have to wait till they tab out of the control to get that information.

Re: How to Add the 1250 character limit to a rich text box in InfoPath Form

Hi Hilary, I got it. Thank you for the quick response. When I test the form in the browser, I realize that Viewing/filling out a form via InfoPath Filler works differently than viewing/filling out the form via a browser. For the example, see attached for more details.

Browser forms do sometimes behave differently than filler - when rendered in the browser, they are using InfoPath Forms Services instead of the InfoPath product. There are variances between the two.
