    Getting Data into SharePoint List

I'm having some difficulties figuring out how to allow my team to pull filtered reports on their own into Excel. My first thought was to create an InfoPath form that queries our SQL tables, allows our users to filter the query in the form and then submit the data to a SharePoint list in which they can export the data. It seems a bit convoluted but whatever works. I can't however, figure out how do this. If I create a database form template, it doesn't allow me to create a data connection to submit data to a sharepoint list, just a document library (but since it's a repeating table that will ultimately be the data, I believe I need it to go into a SharePoint list). If I create a SharePoint list form, I haven't been able to figure out a way to create an SQL query that can be filtered to populate the repeating table. I feel like the answer is probably more simplistic than I'm making it out to be but I'm going to blame my lack of imagination or ingenuity on the holidays, I guess. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

This does sound like an awful lot of work for the given end goal. Can you just use a list with external data? Or is there too much data in your SQL table for that to work well?
